Angel Locsin's MMK "BLUSA" - Too Sensationalized and Far from Reality?

A blogger, The Professional Heckler declared that he received a letter from the University of the Philippines that affirmed the exaggerated and "sensationalized" portrayal of the life story of a certain "Nemie" or "Nemy" aired lst February in the Charo Santos-hosted drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK).

This particular episode entitled "Blusa" starred Angel Locsin who portrayed "Nemie" an alleged summa cum laude in BS Agribusiness Management from the UP Los Banos. Nemie, despite from being a UP summa cum laude, cannot find a job after graduating. This alone is quite unbelievable, since if you're a UP summa cum laude, your chances to be invited as a UP faculty is very high. Second, for the lack of better job options in Manila, Nemie was forced to work as a nightclub dancer. Maybe she might have not applied to the right companies, but certainly agribusiness majors can have better job options working in agri-based firms. It doesn't take to be a UP summa cum laude to figure that out. I found the script even funny because Angel Locsin, before she went nuts in the story, keeps repeating every 5 minutes that:"UP Graduate Ako! Summa Cum Laude". Now, it appears that this story is a total sham after all! To see the entire episode of Blusa, click here.

Anyway, The Professional Heckler is trying to coordinate with the UPLB Public Relations director to shed light about this issue. Here is his statement in his blog:

The summa cum laude claim of “Maalaala Mo Kaya” was a sham, a deception, isang malinaw na pagkakamali kundi man tuwirang panloloko sa mga tagapanood ng naturang programa. I am just waiting for the official statement from Prof. Stella Tirol, Office of Public Relations Director of UP Los Baños. I might post the statement here.

UPDATE! PEParazzi has already taken in this issue. Read here.

  3. me and may coworkers discuss this episode and we have the same reaction.. its impossible.. pero nang sumagot ang manager namin, there we realize na it is possible. compare the time of nemie and our time. 30 years ago advance ba ang technology? can she apply through online web pass her resume? and take note and admit it na those times meron descrimination. kapag taga probinsya ka kahit honor student ka prioritize pa rin nila ang taga manila.. and mas mahigpit ang competition nun. so understandable. and besides naloka sya dahil sa pressure.. una sa kanya umaasa ang pamilya nya... pangalawa hindi matanggap sa work dahil over qualified..tatlo mama nya sya sinisisi sa pagakamatay ng papa nya. don't you think matatanggap mo sa sarili mo yung failure na iyon? ang iba nga hindi makapasa sa board/bar naloloka sya pa kaya.. dont compare ang panahon nun sa panahon ngayon... kita naman na matanda na si nemie...

  4. Errr... Thanks for linking to my blog post, I guess? MMK's researchers are in BIG trouble kung hindi nga summa ng UPLB si Nemie. Then again, giving Nemie the benefit of the doubt, mostly personal factors pa rin ang naging dahilan ng downfall niya. Hindi maganda ang coping niya. Environmental and situational factors may have magnified the pressure on her, pero it was very obvious from the story that she could've done something to counter that pressure.

  6. UPLB should shed a light on the "summa cum laude" issue and should explain how a summa cum laude, if indeed true, ended up a loser. In the first place, they should have monitored the plight of their top-notch alumnus to make sure they become as productive as they should be. They could have hired her as instructor should they knew of nemie's dilemma. Summa cum laudes are very rare. They are like gems in the sand, so easy to track. I wonder why UPLB had let go of a potential agriculture czar.

As to the storyline, it is understandable why it lacked logical progression because it was only based from the account of her sister. Only a psychologically sound nemie could tell us what really happened to her.

  7. i think that there is a possibility na mangyari nga yong nangyari kay nemie na di siya nakahanap ng trabaho...it's a reality na may mga academic achievers na di natatanggap sa isang trabaho.on the part of nemie ,baka ng"oversell" siya sa sarili niya during interview.im sorry to say this ha but there are really companies na ayaw ng tagaUP bec. they are known as activist...no offense intended here,im just stating a fact..i just want to aware you guys of this kind of perception from some companies.i should know coz i worked in a pharmaceutical company where the management is hesitant in accepting UP applicants.sa pharma kasi, flexible ka dapat sa oras....minsan kasi lalo na sa luzon and vizmin, may mga doctors na nakakausap mo sobrang late na aabutin ng lagpas 8pm.meron nga sa visayas macover mo at 11pm na,may iba 1am na!.....ilang beses na kasing may tagaUP na med rep sa amin who are really against it at talagang ngrereklamo sila...masyado din silang mareklamo at parang mgtatayo ng ng union!ewan ko ba baka ngkataon lang din na ganon ang ugali ng tagaUP na napunta sa company namin..for sure di naman lahat!unfair naman if egeneralize.kaya lang napaso lang talaga ang management namin kaya ahesitant na sila.our UP graduates na med rep di talaga ngeextend ng oras..kailangan may overtime pay na sila.masyadong by the book.

  8. To that blogger who said don't compare yung time and job opportunities noon at ngayon, as na-point out na earlier, another UPLB Summa Cum Laude was Cielito Habito, a former NEDA secretary. She was successful and WALA PANG ONLINE APPLICATION nun. This story is not believable. Isa pa, for your information, most of the time, kahit di connected ang course mo, when you are from UP, companies tend to hire you and train you from scratch. Andami kong kakilalang co-alumni ko from UP na ang LAYO ng course sa work nila ngayon, mga AVP and Managers pa. Minsan nga undergrad pa! So please, this crap is unacceptable. Andami pa namang taga-UP sa staff ng ABS.

  9. THE EPISODE IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE, KAYA NGA YONG IBA NAG AABROAD TO EARN, DURING THOSE YEARS SIGURO WALA PANG INTERNET KASI KUNG NANGYARI ITO NGAYON MAYBE NEMIE NASA ABROAD NA

  10. Hi, im from UPLB too. Im deeply concerned with this issue because as a Communication Arts graduate, we were trained on how to practice responsible journalism. You are very right, it's not an issue anymore of "pagdadagdag ng info". The university's name is at stake here. Kung logic ang pagbabasehan, UP grads have this reputation na "they are wanted by most of the companies" (di naman sa bragging pero yun un common notion). so sana naisip nila na i-validate muna yun info before letting the public see this production na we would never know how much damage it would bring sa image ng university. that's my opinion on this. thanks!

  12. I think ang main concern ng UPLB is kung totoo tong story na to... my guess, hindi totoo, ang mga writers ang may mali, mag fabricate lang sila ng kwento, sana yung school na alam nilang hindi magco-complain...

  13. oo nga.. nainis talaga ako nung mapanood ko ito.. una pa lang nagdoubt na ako.. kase imagine i am from uplb and I have many friends there too.. di pa nga sila cum laude nakakapagturo na sila how much more kung summa na sila..baka di na sila paalisin ng admin diba? parang sabi ko ako nga sobrang layo ng job sa course ko but still the company hired me.. nung time na nga yun parang nainis ako sa buong production nung MMK kase parang hindi man lang nila naiisip yung ibang possibility.. basta na lang may story.. ngayon tuloy nagdodoubt na ako kung yung mga story na nilabas nila eh totoo..kase naman ako di pala sila nagveverify.. inamin na nila na di nila naverify sa up yung record diba? hay naku.. gising gising... gawin ng mabuti ang trabaho para maiwasan ang pagkakamali....
